Study Shows Vioxx® Does Not Cause Injuries to Gastrointestinal Tract
A clinical study concluded that Vioxx® does not cause injuries, such as stomach ulcers, as often as other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs are the most common and effective pain relievers used by arthritis sufferers. They can cause stomach ulcers by damaging the gastro-intestinal system, including the stomach and upper and lower intestine. However, Vioxx® lawsuits involving stomach ulcers and bleeding are still expected to emerge, as claims are plentiful. Many plaintiffs in such Vioxx® cases expect favorable judgment.
Original Clinical Study Shows Vioxx® Effective in Treatment of Osteoarthritis
In a clinical study performed in 1998, Vioxx® was shown to relieve joint pain in osteoarthritis patients. The study enrolled 3,900 patients for six to 86 weeks. In patients with osteoarthritis, pain, stiffness, and function improved. Vioxx® also alleviated post-operative pain. A key finding was that Vioxx® did not cause stomach ulcers as often as other pain relievers.
